Evaluating the Band Saw Blade Tension System

After the lathe, the band saw is probably the most interactive of all the stationary woodworking tools. Many different styles, types, and sizes of blades can be used. On many machines, more than one blade speed is available. Blade changing is frequent and requires accommodations, such as adjusting and assuring the proper positioning of the blade, blade guides, and blade thrust bearings. Then, of course, the blade needs to be made to track properly.

All this is at the discretion of the woodworker operator, so there can be a learning curve before the saw’s user reaches an acceptable level of mechanical performance. It’s not difficult, but it’s also not instantaneous. Doing all this a few times, and maybe a few more, will lead to confidence and repeatable acceptable results. Clearly, human interaction with the saw significantly affects the characteristics of the cutting. Are there then ways to improve the robustness of the process, thus improving the likelihood of getting good results?
